Bicyclist Struck by Motor Vehicle

bicycle and car accident

Bicyclist hit by hit-and-run driver.

The Manchester Union Leader reports that a Pelham, NH bicyclist was hit by a driver who subsequently fled the scene.  The bicyclist sustained injuries, and the driver was nowhere to be found.  How will the cyclist be compensated for her injuries?  If the driver cannot be found, are there other ways to be compensated?  Yes!

First, if the bicyclist owned an automobile and had uninsured motorist coverage, the uninsured motorist coverage would cover the bicyclist when the bicyclist is riding a bike or when the bicyclist is even walking on the street as a pedestrian.  Uninsured motorist coverage is intended to provide that protection when the wrongdoer has no insurance or cannot even be found.  If the bicyclist who sustained injuries did not have a car but lived with a relative who did have a car, that relative’s automobile insurance policy would also provide uninsured motorist coverage that would protect and compensate the injured bicyclist when the wrongdoer runs off.

We should all make certain that we check our insurance coverage to make certain that we have adequate uninsured motorist coverage. That coverage is intended to protect us and our loved ones when the other party has no insurance or when they cannot even be found.
